Our Awaken products are made with both lemongrass and lavender pure essential oils. They launched at Easter which coincided with some beautiful Spring sunny weather and smell wonderfully fresh and uplifting.
I have been using my Awaken candle recently in the garden which not only creates a wonderful ambience and aroma but is also reputed to keep the midges and mosquitos at bay. Thinking ahead to the long Summer nights I’m thinking I just might use my Awaken candle, wax melts and atmosphere mist to scent the air or to spray around the garden seating area to help to repel our little flying friends.
Of all the natural mosquito repellents, citronella is the most commonly known solution. Every Summer we get out the citronella candles or indeed the harsh sprays. We prefer the natural scent of lemongrass and lavender essential oils. Whilst some essential oils should not be used on your skin if you are out in the sun, we find by using them in candles, wax melts and mists makes for a perfect solution.
Citronella or “mosquito” plants are actually scented geraniums, a variety called Pelargonium Citrosum that has very little if any ability to repel mosquitoes. However, citronella as we think of it is actually an essential oil produced by the leaves and stems of lemongrass plants. A completely different plant, the Cymbopogon (lemongrass) genus, produces the perfumed oil. Citronella plants (or Pelargonium citrosum) are commonly thought to be the best at repelling mosquitos. However, Lemongrass (or Cymbopogon) is superior.
So why use lemongrass oil instead of citronella? The answer is simple - while the two smell very similar, we use lemongrass essential oil because on its own or coupled with lavender the smell is mighty nice! Furthermore, studies support lemongrass and lavender essential oil's use as a bug repellent.
